International cooperation

Liepāja is the second largest Latvian city on the Baltic Sea’s eastern coast and has a rich historical background of traditions in long-term international cooperation. For centuries Liepāja was a home to many nationalities – Germans, Russians, Lithuanians, Jews and others. The multicultural diversity has been imprinted in the city’s very existence, and today, due to being a port city, Liepāja has smoothly transformed into a transit hub between West and East.

The multicultural diversity is more and more seen in Liepāja’s educational sphere. Being a home to various educational institutions, the city attracts a number of foreign students, at the same time providing opportunities for local students to study abroad.

The brightest examples of successful ongoing international cooperation are 11 twin cities and a constant flow of prominent guests from all over the world. Liepāja has welcomed royal families, presidents, prime ministers, world leading businessmen and all as one have acknowledged the ability of the city to be a solid target for investments and cooperation.

Twin and partner municipalities of Liepaja city:
Liepāja is also a member of the Union of Baltic Cities –an international community of 100 member cities in all ten countries surrounding the Baltic Sea.
