Liepāja is not only a city of culture, but also a very active city – local football, basketball, ice-hockey, handball and floor-ball teams are successfully competing in the highest leagues of national championships. Men’s ice-hockey and football teams also participate in international tournaments.

However, the heat really gets turned on when “Rally Kurzeme” gets on under way in the middle of July. In previous years this event has attracted representatives from national, Russian and European championships and nowadays also continues to attract world-class rally stars and thousands of spectators to Liepāja and its beautiful vicinity.

Liepāja is also famous for its sports schools. It is worth to mention the football and ice-hockey clubs, which not only promote these sports in Latvia, but also have an important role in the preparation of new generations of sportsmen on a national scale.
